What is Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)?

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, or PGD, is an advanced genetic testing procedure available at our Manhattan, New York fertility center. PGD genetic testing is used to identify some abnormalities present in embryos prior to transfer during an New York IVF cycle. The process involves isolating a single cell from an 8-cell embryo and analyzing the cell for some chromosomal abnormalities and inherited genetic diseases, including cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, tay sachs, and Huntington’s disease. By selecting healthy embryos to transfer, preimplantation genetic diagnosis increases the likelihood of a successful pregnancy for couples who risk passing on genetic disorders to their children and couples who have been unsuccessful with previous in vitro fertilization cycles.

New York PGD for Genetic Diagnosis

Because of either advanced age or inherited genetic markers, many of our patients are at risk for producing embryos that contain chromosomal abnormalities. The presence of these chromosomal abnormalities can potentially inhibit embryo implantation, contribute to miscarriage, and result in the birth of a child afflicted with a variety of physical and mental developmental problems. To improve their chances of a successful pregnancy, many of our patients choose to undergo PGD genetic testing at our Manhattan, New York practice.

New York PGD for Gender Selection

Embryonic gender selection allows parents to choose the sex of their child prior to birth. PGD is currently the most reliable and proven method for determining gender in the embryonic stage of development. Candidates for medical PGD gender selection include couples that may be at risk for passing on certain genetic diseases found only in male or female offspring. In this situation, the couple may wish to select embryos of only one sex for transfer to the uterus during IVF. Candidates for elective gender selection include couples that are seeking “family balancing,” i.e., representation of both sexes in one family.

New York PGD – The Process

Because PGD genetic testing requires the micromanipulation of embryos, those embryos must be accessible in vitro, or outside of the body. For this reason, women seeking PGD genetic testing must undergo in vitro fertilization at our Manhattan office. During a standard IVF cycle, multiple eggs are retrieved from the female partner and combined with sperm in a laboratory. As soon as fertilization occurs and the embryo reaches the multi-cell stage, PGD genetic testing can begin.

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is accomplished by removing a single cell from a fertilized embryo. Because every cell within an embryo contains a roadmap of our entire genetic makeup, the examination of a single cell can reveal abnormal chromosomal development (the removal of a single cell does not impede the development of the embryos). Once a determination has been made as to the health and/or gender of the embryo, it can then be transferred back to the uterus in the hopes of achieving pregnancy, or stored for future use via our New York egg freezing services

Preimplantation genetic diagnosis can substantially improve the chances of a successful pregnancy for women who may have been unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy to full-term in the past. When healthy embryos are implanted during IVF cycles, the likelihood of miscarriage is greatly reduced, and the possibility of transferring genetic or sex-linked diseases is all but eliminated.
